A Message From Aubrey's Mom

Tuberous Sclerosis is recognized by a myriad of characteristics; uncontrollable seizures (of every type) mental retardation, skin manifestations, calcification of the brain, tumors, aggressive and violent behavior, and worst of all dementia. Tuberous Sclerosis can manifest itself in any family member at any time in their life.  Part of the time it is caused by mutation, and the other part is genetic.
Fortunately Aubrey was noted at one year old as being delayed, and was sent to the proper schools. She didn't have any tumors or calcification until 3 years old. Her seizures have never been under complete control.  Because she showed symptoms and characteristics of this disease at such a young age her early learning processes were interrupted. She is 22, now but remains mentally 3 years old.
Presently Aubrey is declining in her health. Dementia has taken over now and she is hospitalized more than she is home.  There is always a struggle trying to balance medicines.
As her mother and guardian I have tried to give Aubrey as normal a life as possible. Perhaps that is why she is still alive.  She is a fighter and a sociable person for the most part.  She never gives up and is usually always smiling.  Despite the turmoil that dementia brings Aubrey still struggles to be as normal as possible and continue as much of a normal life as she can.  For this I admire her.
Aubrey would love to hear from anyone who would like to write or say hello!  Please make her happy by just signing in...  By doing this, we will know you have become aware of this disease now.  And awareness is what we need!
